The Chilling Mystery of Amelia Earhart’s Disappearance

Even though Nikumaroro Island is uninhabited by humans, some believe it may be home to one of the most terrifying creatures on Earth.

On June 1, 1937, Amelia Earhart set out to make history. Her goal was to become the first woman to fly all the way around the world. Accompanied by navigator Fred Noonan, she began her journey from North America, traveling through South America, across the Atlantic Ocean to Africa, then on to India, Southeast Asia, and eventually Papua New Guinea.

Just two days after arriving there, they took off again. Their next planned stop was Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. But they never made it.

Their plane vanished without a trace.

Despite massive global search efforts and headlines around the world, no wreckage was ever found. Two weeks later, they were officially declared lost at sea.

But the story didn’t end there.

Three years later, about 563 kilometers from Howland Island, a British researcher exploring Nikumaroro discovered something strange: a partial human skeleton scattered across the island, near signs of an old campfire.

At first, scientists thought the remains could belong to Earhart. However, when the bones were sent to a lab in Fiji, experts concluded they didn’t match her and dismissed them.

Decades passed.

In 2017, a biologist re-examined the case using old photographs of the bones. By comparing their measurements with known proportions of Amelia Earhart’s body, he found a striking match.

Further investigations uncovered more clues on the island: old bottles dating back to the 1930s, a jar of freckle cream (which Earhart was known to use), and even a photo showing possible aircraft landing gear near the island taken shortly after her disappearance.

So what really happened?

One theory is deeply unsettling.

Nikumaroro may be uninhabited by people, but it is home to coconut crabs giant land crabs that can grow up to a meter in size. They have incredibly powerful claws, strong enough to crack open coconuts, and they can carry several times their own body weight.

But they don’t just eat coconuts.

These creatures are known to hunt birds, small animals even pigs. They climb trees, tear apart prey, and drag it back to their burrows. At night, thousands of them emerge, guided by an extremely sharp sense of smell. They can detect blood from far away.

Some researchers believe that Earhart and Noonan may have crash-landed on the island and suffered severe injuries from coral reefs. As they bled and tried to survive, they may have unknowingly attracted these crabs.

In the darkness, the crabs could have swarmed them.

It’s a horrifying possibility. And while it remains just a theory, it might explain why no complete remains were ever found.

To this day, the mystery of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance remains unsolved. No confirmed trace of her, her companion, or their aircraft has ever been found...
